What does Paper Quilling have to do with a craft business? Well… if it becomes popular to purchase items that have exquisite quilled embellishments… shouldn't you already know how to use quilling paper and quilling tools?
How old is the art of quilling?
"I forgot to tell you that my new bonnet flares a great deal, and that I have white lace quilling round the face with little black dotty things in it on stems.
They don't wear those close cottage bonnets now. And aunt has had my dresses made longer and my pantalettes shorter, so that they hardly show at all.
She says I shall soon wear long dresses, I am getting so tall. Alice wears them now, and her feet look so pretty, and she has such pretty slippers: little French purple ones, and sometimes ark green, and sometimes beautiful light gray, to go with different dresses.
I don't care for anything but the slippers, but I should like such ones as hers. Aunt says I can't, of course, as long as I wear black, but I can have purple ones next summer to wear with my white dresses. "
An excerpt from " REAL FOLKS by MRS. A. D. T. WHITNEY 1893":
So it seems that paper quilling wasn't called quilling in 1893. It is however a craft that will never go out of style completely. The popularity of quilling comes and goes… it seems to be in somewhat of an upswing right now. Did you know that quilling is one of the least expensive crafts to get started with? It really only requires a small bit of specialty quilling paper, a beginners book and a few quilling tools.

The quote you have has nothing to do with quilling which is PAPER FILIGREE.
What she refers to in her speech is lace “I have white lace quilling round the face with little black dotty things in it on stems” not paper filligree.
Quilling was called quilling in the 1800’s as well as paper filigree and other names.
And I’m not sure what you mean by the statement “So it seems that paper quilling wasn’t called quilling in 1893.” SHE WASN’T REFERRING TO QUILLING BUT TO LACE!!!!!!
Also quilling DOES NOT REQUIRE SPECIAL PAPER (any 20-25 lb paper that will curl works) NO BOOKS AS THERE ARE TONS OF FREE ITEMS ON THE WEB (Many of the legitimate quilling stores have links to such sites) and NO TOOLS ARE REQUIRED. There are many people who quill with only their fingers. So you’re mistaken about your statement other then quilling is inexpensive to start. ” Did you know that quilling is one of the least expensive crafts to get started with? It really only requires a small bit of specialty quilling paper, a beginners book and a few quilling tools.”
Although quilling can be done without tons of skill, quilling that is sold takes time to learn and create. Pieces can take months to complete. It is not a “craft” but rather an art from. This is one of the reasons both quilling guilds either have minimum criteria or are creating such criteria.
Those interested in quilling will find many FREE supports if they search for them. Before buying any book check with experienced quillers (there are many online groups and 2 quilling guilds you can contact). Don’t buy an e-book just because they promise a ton of “FREE” things. I bought such a book and it was a waste of energy and I never got any of the “Free things” other then some really lame e-books about dieting and running a business (and that book was also a waste of space).
